The Game

Wizmagonster is a laid-back monster taming adventure game currently in development. The free demo contains roughly the first 30-40 minutes of what is planned as a longer game.

In the world of Wizmagonster, problems are solved with teamwork. Your creature friends can perform actions like lifting, climbing, chopping, thinking, hugging, racing, hiding and more. However, their unique traits make them better suited for some jobs more than others. You’ll have to decide who’s best for the task at hand.

If you want to help a wide range of people, you’ll need to make a lot of friends. Explore every nook and cranny of the wilderness and you just might meet someone with a unique and useful talent. But watch out: the terrain is treacherous!

I am a solo developer, and this is my first project. Feedback is greatly appreciated.


Keyboard Controls

WASD or arrows:   move / select

K or X or Space:   interact / accept

J or Z:   back / sprint

O or C:   open menu

 

Some gamepads should work too, but aren't fully tested.

Saving seems to work better in the downloadable version rather than in the browser version.


Tips for Playing

Make friends!
  • The best strategy is to make a lot of friends
  • It takes energy to overcome hazards and more party members = more energy
  • If all your party members run out of energy, that’s game over
  • You can still make new friends even if your party is full. You can change your party members by visiting a wishing well
Know your teammates!
  • Each creature has a list of traits. You can check these traits in the ‘Team’ tab of the menu
  • You can’t check a party member’s traits in the middle of a puzzle, so you’ll have to memorise them
  • Status effects like ‘Muddy’ and ‘Dizzy’ greatly affect a creature’s performance. These statuses are visible, so pay attention to how your party members look
Explore!
  • The world is full of useful resources
  • Items are often hidden in out-of-the-way places
  • Wishing wells restore your party’s energy and clear away their statuses
  • People and bookshelves can provide useful information
Keep trying!
  • If all your party members run out of energy, you’ll have to start again from the last wishing well you visited
  • Don’t worry though: all your friends will stay with you and keep any experience they gained

Overall a really fun experience! I love the little Easter egg of "Are you a boy or a girl?" with the option to just say "No." That was really nice 🏳️‍🌈

I wish you could interact with the NPCs more (most of them only say one line, and talking to the spiky guy after our training session makes him "say" an error message), and I found the menu system a bit clunky.  It would be nice if, say:

  • M key took me straight to the map
  • J key took me straight to the journal
  • T key took me straight to the "team" page

And so on.

I also wish that explored areas were mapped out in more detail.  I have a terrible sense of direction (even in video games) and I'm always getting turned around, even in the forests.  Starting out with a completed map would take a lot of the joy out of things, but if the ground you'd already covered was mapped out, I think that would make the experience more fun.  It would also be nice if I could rename my team members later on, rather than having just one chance. 

Does each species have a predetermined personality, or is that shaped by the tasks they do?

Can I cheer my Naisad/Cryad up???? I feel so bad for it :(

One final question: when the full version is done, where will we be able to find it?

I like the game but it crashed on my laptop and now nothing is working other than the screen is frozen, the music is stuck, my mouse doesn't work and my laptop doesn't turn off, but I still like it

Very sweet game, but the "Oldzheimer" joke with the owl felt really inappropriate, since it's a horrible disease

Absolutely lovely game, the graphics are gorgeous and the music is perfect for it!! I love the critters, especially my lil raccoon buddy (Ruffy my beloved <3), and it gets cuter with each evolution!! 

Could I suggest having a guide explaining the effects of different traits?? Probably only unlocking info as you discover the traits in your buddies, just cuz some are a bit confusing lol (e.g. I have no idea why natural works for some things but not others :0) 

That aside though, this was a great demo and I'm super super excited to see more!! :DDD

Edit: Also quick question, when the game is updated, will the save data be preserved or wiped?? 

im having alot of trouble finding #25/#26 (a few hours of looking!), can i have a hint? :3

Hi, sorry for the late reply. There is a seperate area off the main route in the cave which is the only spawning location for that species line.

Yep! Numbers 1-38 are obtainable in the demo.

150+ have been designed for the full game.

I also found bugs with the well:

Apparently you can change you team and the sprites of the "followers" won't change until a next screen change.

Also, there is a weird bug with changing teams where your team disapears all together in the well menu, but reapears later. However I could not replicate it.

Wow, I haven't seen this before. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

The well needs to be completely overhauled I suspect.

Cute! I thought it was a fun spin on the classic pokemon games. 

Only advice would be to make the happenings less often or avoidable somehow, it became a bit frustrating to lift rocks every 10 steps.
